Variable Darner (Aeshna interrupta)

A somewhat common "blue" or "mosaic" darner. Occurs in 3 forms -- striped, interrupted, or spotted -- pertaining to the pattern of thoracic side stripes. No other blue/mosaic darner shows anything like the interrupted or spotted forms, which has the thoracic stripes broken into four pieces. The striped form has two very thin but complete and unnotched thoracic stripes. The closest look-alike might be the Shadow Darner but the Shadow's thoracic stripes are broader, abdomen is more chestnut-brown, claspers are wedge-type (paddle-type claspers in Variable), and face lacks a black crossline. Perhaps beware of the far rarer (in WI anyway) Zigzag Darner, which also has thin and somewhat irregular thoracic side stripes.
