Owl Moth

On September 21, 1999, I found this Owl Moth attracted to the night lights of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center near Ashland. Native to the extreme southern U.S. and tropics, this individual apparently furnished only the third Wisconsin state record and the northernmost by far.

It looks like Thysania zenobia for those interested.

What an incredible sight. Amazing size. I think I found one once at a gas station in Texas. It was huge, and sat perched on my finger like a bird. A man who worked at the zoo took it with him. Voted.
