I was out for a walk today and spotted a small butterfly that I had never seen before.
I initially thought it was a Speckled Wood but it was obviously to small when it landed, about the size of a blue butterfly.
The colour appeared to be darky brown or dark reddish brown with prominent yellow patches, not spots.
Its flight was reasonably strong and when landing it preferred the ground on the three occasions that I was given but it would not let me get close enough for a better photograph.
I have looked through my Richard South's Butterflies of the British Isles and I could not find it and though that it might be a migrant.
I will send you a couple of poor quality photographs if you would send me your E-Mail address and perhaps you could advise me if you were able to identify it from my description.

In Lazio in august I saw a white butterfly with what looked like a wide, very pale brown edge to the hind wings and no other markings that I could see. About the size of a red admiral. It had a very pretty,flitty flight and was impossible to photograph as it didn't settle. It was definitely not one of the whites we see here in somerset. There were white admirals flying in the area which was grassy/herby near an olive grove and chestnut trees.

Any ideas please? Sighted cape cornwall 12th june. An exhausted butterfly. Yellow outer on top wings. Then black underneath that with LEMON blob markings. CRIMSON under belly.
