The classic thing to do at Lake Powell is rent a boat and explore the many, many side canyons. The water level is down a great deal, as evidenced by the white band along the canyon walls. They say many places are now accessible that have not been seen since the area was flooded after the dam was completed. I'm not a big water person, but have done the house boat thing, and must admit I liked it.

These views are from Romana Mesa, reached by a gravel, dirt road out of Big Water, Utah. Terra Ferma, my kind of trip. The last few miles are very rough. The light is best in winter or mid-summer. All these shots are from summer, and are looking East late in the day. It's easy to have summer storms just show up out of nowhere, and defy traditional trade winds and surprise you. I also came closer to stepping on a rattlesnake on the bluffs here than anywhere else I've been. For some reason, I erroneously had it in my head that they shouldn't be there so high above the water.
