in september of 2003 hurricane isabel came ashore on north carolina's outer banks with 115
mph winds and 25 foot waves. it tore a hole in hatteras island just south of frisco and in this shot you can see the shattered remnants of highway 12 in the foreground. the inlet was filled in a few weeks later and today there is no visible evidence of the breach. but inlet formation is a relatively common occurence on the outer banks and other inlets will certainly be formed when the right storms come along.
