Sundial of Human Involvement

4 - IMAGE SERIES

Torquay, Victoria

Sundial of Human Involvement
Located in Torquay Victoria on the foreshore land at Fishermans Beach. This unique Sundial is known as an Analemmatic sundial mainly located at science museums, planetariums and only occasionally in public places.
The sundial was assembled in the traditional and time-honoured method of mosaic and comprises more than 120,000 glass Tesserae tiles. The sundial represents the traditional dreaming stories of the indigenous Wathaurong people.
To ensure accuracy, the Torquay sundial is designed for the exact latitude and longitude if its site, the sundial faces True South. At most times it is accurate within a few minutes.
The sundial utilises the fact that the sun travels in a predictable pattern over the course of a year projecting the suns shadow to measure time, not only the hours, but also weeks and months, you can tell the time by using the hour markers (shells) and your shadow falling on the ground.
Your body becomes the ‘dial’ on this unique piece of art. Stand in the centre of the design and you can tell the time by the shadow cast by your body.
