Saturday, August 19, 2006 - Kathy and I were preparing for our trip to Camp Casey which is located in Crawford, Texas. Camp Casey was founded by Cindy Sheehan just a couple of years ago as a protest against the war in Iraq. Crawford is the home of the Western Whitehouse- President Bush has a ranch there. This was to be our third trip there in the last two years. The camp had been open since August 6, but due to prior commitments, I could not get down there to shoot until the 19th. The trip did not start well.
We got a late start and then, right before we left the Dallas area, we found out that the "Peace Action Texas Meeting" that was scheduled at the Crawford Peace House that day, had been cancelled. Also, something was happening in Austin, the state capitol of Texas. The details were sketchy. We heard that a lot of the protesters may be leaving camp and heading for Austin for the day. So we basically had no idea what to expect when we arrived at Camp Casey. And another problem was the heat. Texas is in the middle of one of it's worst heat waves in years. Although it was turning into a hazy, partly cloudy day, the temperature was expected to top 103 degrees.
The situation about the trip looked ominous, so I decided that we would take our time on the way there, turn this little venture into a road trip and I would just shoot along the way. We also decided to take a different route back and travel through the Texas countryside hitting small towns along the way.
When we arrived at Camp Casey, our worst fears were realized as the camp was almost empty. Everyone had left, heading for Austin for some planned protest or fund raiser- I never could get the story straight. There were maybe twenty people left in the camp, it was almost deserted. We stayed for a couple of hours while I shot. When we left, we traveled country roads back home and I shot along the way.
This is now the third location for Camp Casey. It is only about half a mile from downtown Crawford and it is much larger than the previous two. The site for the camp is just a little over five acres in size. In this small Texas ranching town, Sheehan has always been looked upon as a trouble-making outsider. The land for Camp Casey III was purchased by Cindy Sheehan just a few months ago. She has now beccome one of them. She is a land-owning, tax-paying citizen of Crawford, Texas - just like George W. Bush
