Halliburton Protest in Duncan, OK on May 17th, 2006

I am primarily a street and documentary photographer.

On May 17th, 2006 the annual shareholders meeting for the Halliburton Company was held at the Simmons Center in Duncan, Oklahoma. The company was founded in Duncan over 70 years ago but it's national headquarters are now located in Houston, Texas. The Halliburton Company is a major player in the Iraqi War. Because of the violent protest at last year's meeting, this year's meeting was moved to Duncan in hopes of minimizing the amount of protesters. I am a freelance photojournalist and I was there to document the event.

The "Bring Them Home Now" bus arrived Tuesday evening carrying protesters from Texas. They camped at Lake Humphrey that night and arrived at the protest early Wednesday morning. A crowd of about 150 to 200 protesters showed up for the meeting this year.

Later in the protest, sixteen protesters were arrested for crossing police lines trying to gain access to the Halliburton meeting. Their purpose in crossing police lines was to execute a citizens arrest on the CEO of Halliburton. The arrested protesters were led by 72 year old Hiram Myers of Oklahoma City. Myers is an attorney and a former war veteran and is a highly respected member of the peace movement in Oklahoma. The group arrested have now become known as the "Halliburton 16".

The young people dressed in black and wearing hoods and masks are members of the ARA- the Anti-Racist Action Network. Their presence made the police very nervous.

Once again, as last year, the shareholders of the company were ushered in and out of the meeting under police guard.

The very last photo on page 6 is a group shot of the Halliburton 16. It was not shot by me. It was shot by Jon Axford of Houston, Texas.

The Peace Bus carrying protesters from Dallas arrives early Wednesday morning.	The ARA arriving early in the morning at the beginning of the protest. The arrests energizes the crowd of protesters led by Darla Shelden of Oklahoma City, one of the chief organizers of the protest.	The ARA members move from in front of the Simmons Center to the street. The police shift men that way as well.

The ARA are in full force now along Chisolm Trail and are trying to block traffic.

The protest had a team of attorneys that were present for the arrests. The lead attorney was Rex Friend. He is a master of civil rights and has been arrested himself for protesting during the Black Fox nuclear plant protest. Rex had several conversations with the Duncan Chief of Police and they were told in advance that we would be conducting a peaceful non violent protest. Other attorneys that drove down from Oklahoma City for the event were Lynn Barnett, Doug Parr and ACLU attorney Tina Izadi.

Three Years Later and i'm just seeing this now. I was not planned and quite a few Others were not Planned. The police were totally unprepared and this line of dialogue... Loses. That's it. Peace and it must be a Happy place where you're at. Too bad we couldn't All live thar.

Thank you for the info Mr. Rowell. I agree with you that someone in charge of the planned protest probably contacted the police ahead of time, and gave them a heads up that there would be a real possibility that some of the protesters would cross the police line in an act of civil disobedience. That is for safety. It gives the police warning that a peaceful protest to cross police lines is planned and this does not catch the police off guard. I have seen this done before. I do not believe that the police knew who was going to cross the line or how many would be doing so. I was in the huddle with Myers taking photos, when crossing the line was being discussed and I know for a fact that Myers and the protesters did not know exactly who or how many would be crossing the line. I want to thank you once again for getting back in touch with me on this matter. All views and opinions are welcome.

I received my information from the Stephens county sheriffs department. They knew 48 hours in advance the number of protester that would be arrested. The only drama that wasn’t staged was the gentleman who tore down the barricade.

I sent a message to Rick Rowell asking him to confirm his statement about the staging of the arrests of the Halliburton 16- I have yet to hear from him. From what I can gather, I believe he is an employee of Halliburton. I have never, ever deleted or censored any comments on this gallery and I do not intend to. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

The was a restaged arrest.. the protesters planned ahead of time with the police department who and how they would be arrested. It was nothing more than theater…

What a bunch of idiot hippies, what have they ever done to improve the world. Halliburton employs hundreds of thousands of people, they are the first to clean up oil spills and other disasters, they have been feeding and supplying logistics for our troops since WWII, they put out the oil fires set by Saddam in the first Gulf War... and the hippies, they stand around and think they know better.. yea.. real productive.. I bet they never broke a sweat protesting Saddam's torture chambers or when he was gassing the Kurds.

enjoyed the pictures. A couple of corrections: Number of protestors was probably 150, maximum 200. The location of the protest was NOT in front of Halliburton HQ, but in front of an event center (Simmons Center) where the Halliburton meeting was being held. The word "presence" is misspelled in the third from last line.

As I choke down these very dangerous actions by the repiglathugs, my body/brain is so repelled by the constant arresting of protesters that I can think only of the hitler regime in the 30's and 40,s. nazi's murderd thousands, millions of people who were of the Jewish faith. The repiglathugs are after the gay folks by changing the CONSTITION, for God's sake, to arrest those who are gay. SICKENING!!!! Why are'nt the people screaming in the streets? I do lots of that! I am 73 years of age, howeer, my spirit is half of that. I am healthy. I take every opportunity to unseat bu$h and his criminal family. The other 15 walked peacefully though to be arrested in an act of civil disobedience. The boots were brought from Oklahoma City by the OK Veterans For Peace group. The minister is Diane Baker. The republican against the war is John Walters (OKC). The two girls holding hands are Katie Heim and Jennifer Rooks from Houston Global Awareness.
