Norfolk

A sight that will never be seen again around Norfolk. Three different versions of N&W signal structures in one location. These are the old Colley Avenue signals just outside of Lambert's Point. You have a double mast signal, full span signal bridge, and a cantilever signal bridge that all served both the N&W and Norfolk Southern for many years. I wouldn't be at all surprised if these signals began their life during the N&W steam era. Only the full span signal bridge survives, albeit with Safetrans signal heads. The other two signals were replaced between November 2005 and January 2006. This leaves the West End Portlock signals as the only N&W CPL's left in the Tidewater area.

Here is a photo from 1994 showing a coal train coming by all three signals.

It's a real shame that they trashed those old signals. They were definitely a work of art. I've caught quite a few trains near this location on video, on VHS-C, Hi8, and MiniDV. I can't wait to catch something here with HDV in the future!
