Wolfe, WV

Then & Now - Wolfe, WV - Although it was one of the shortest branch lines on the Norfolk & Western Railway, the first loads of coal from the Pocahontas coal region were hauled out on the 4.6-mile Pocahontas Branch. One small community the branch passed through was Wolfe, WV, located on the VA/WV state line. Several years ago, I scanned a collection of black and white prints, and immediately recognized the scene in one particular photograph. It was a near match to a photo that I had taken from the exact same spot on October 19, 2009. While the older photo is undated, it is definitely pre-1950 as that's when electric operations ceased, and the overhead catenary was no longer needed. Also in the older photo, you'll note two identical posts on either side of the track just before the white building. Those are N&W state line markers. If you look closely in my 2009 image, the marker on the left was still (barely) standing.
