Earlier today Doug Riddell challenged me to post some passenger varnish photos. I'm bending the rules a bit by not posting a photo that I took, but rather one from my collection. This also ties into my "where is it" post from Sunday night which featured a Norfolk Southern local in Waverly, VA and ties into Throwback Thursday. Tonight we're once again visiting the small town in Sussex County, but we're going back to "good ole' 1955" as Lorraine Baines (later McFly) proclaimed in the movie Back to the Future. The date is January 13 of that year and noted photographer H. Reid was positioned along the N&W's Norfolk Division mainline to catch J Class No. 609 leading Train No. 3, the westbound Pocahontas. The train is seen here crossing Maifield Avenue as the engineer maintains track speed to keep No. 3 on schedule after a 1:30 PM on-time departure from Norfolk Terminal Station. For a minute there I thought this was Chris Dort and Jeff Tiedemann bringing Amtrak Northeast Regional No. 174 through town.
