The "other" end of the N&W's famous Elkhorn Tunnel. While rarely photographed when compared to the west portal, it was here on June 26, 1950 that the grand opening ceremony was held. The ribbon was broken by the eastbound Powhatan Arrow led by J Class No. 603. Only the eastbound track was completed at the time and westbound trains continued to use the old Coaldale Tunnel for several more weeks until the westbound main was completed through the new 7,107' structure.
