South Yard

Sometimes you're just in the right place at the right time. On Tuesday, October 16, 2007 I was fortunate to have documented the last train to pass the old SAL signals at South Yard. In this view looking north from Goodes Street, signal crews can be seen congregating around the southbound signal mast which they are about to take down. As soon as Y124 passes, crews will remove the northbound mast and activate the new installations. During the SAL and SCL era, this interlocking was known as the "Middle Crossover at South Yard" when the line between Rockets and Commerce Road was considered single track with a passing siding. The track on the far right was the mainline and the track in the middle, some of which is torn up, was the siding. The mainline switch in use today to access the yard lead (track on the far left) is actually the old crossover.
