WASHINGTON -- A tourist attraction became a crime scene when a woman's body was found floating in the Tidal Basin on Saturday morning.
Police were called to the basin, near the Roosevelt Memorial, about 11:30 a.m., where they found the body.
The remains, believed to be those of a woman in her 40s, were taken to the medical examiner's office. Police said they don't know who the woman was or how she died. She was not carrying identification.
Police did say it appears the woman was not in the water for very long.
Tourists on the Tidal Basin said they were shocked by the discovery.
"This is our nation's capital," one said. "What's happening here?" (POSTED: 12:51 pm EST December 29, 2007)
