Ouarzazate (war-zazat)
at the confluence of the Atlas, Draa and Dades valleys, has always been strategically important, evidenced by the huge Taourirt kasbah at its heart. Like so many other places, the town really only came into being in the 1920s when the French made it an administrative centre and garrison town, which it remains today.
