The BMW R80ST

The R80ST is claimed by many to be the best handling aircooled BMW flat-twin engined motorcycle ever. Those who own one of these relatively rare machines tend to keep them. Before buying mine I had a 1983 R65LS, a 1987 R65 and a 1987 R80 and while I loved them all my R80ST is certainly my favourite.

The R80ST was introduced in 1982 and production stopped in 1984 after just 5,963 were made. It was conceived of as a street version of the earlier R80G/S and had a smaller front wheel and shorter suspension travel front and rear. The forks and instrument binacle were actually from the R65 of that time. It didn't sell well, due in part to the small, 19 litre fuel tank which limited its range - many owners replace the original tank with a later R100GS type tank for this reason. The R100GS tank fits with very little modification and as well as allowing longer distances between fuel stops also adds to rider comfort by giving the rider something shaped well for knee-gripping under heavy braking... the ST tank allows the rider to slide forward under these conditions.

The ST came in 2 colours, grey and red.

This is a collection of photos of R80STs that I have collected, mostly from people who own STs but a few are ones that I have lifted, without permission, from the Internet. If anyone would like me to remove their bike from this collection, please let me know and it will be done.

If you have any pictures of STs or any ST related photos, plain views or photos showing modifications, please send them to me and I will add them to this album. Photos of ST's being ridden would be good, too. If you have any, leave a message on this site and I'll contact you. You may have to wait some time as I only check the site periodically.

In my opinion the tank of ST looks really stylish. It's no kind of lump as I think many Beemer tanks to be.
So I'd like to mount a ST Tank to my R80 monolever (from the year 1985). Does it fit? Are the frames similar? Perhaps the ST tank is longer than R80 tank so that I've to modify the seat of my bike but that's not a problem.
I'd appreciate very much your comments and opinions!

Hugo, old stick: I rode an ST in Europe last June (2007): a month from Germany to Finland and back. Marvelous, capable bike. I came home and modified my '82 R65LS to incorporate what I liked about the R80ST. Now I have what I believe is the best of both and an improvement on both: an R65/80LS-ST. Can send pics if you like. Hey guys, a friend is having me put his R80ST on EBAY. I'm trying to get a feel for what the value is. It's an 83. It's unrestored but a daily driver. Any ideas? Thanks for any input.

I love my ST (now enlarged to 1,000cc) but it is very uncomfortable. I use it everyday for a 72 mile round trip commute to Birmingham, minor roads, urban roads and Motorway. Even with the higher top ratio fitted, it's a bit undergeared for higher speed cruising but brilliant of course in the lanes. I have often used it in Class 'O' in MCC trials (Land's End etc) (just fitted a trials tyre on the back).

Where can I get a softer seat?
What about a bigger tank? Who supplies these?
Where can I get a 3.50 x 19 trials tyre for the front?

THE VERY WORST THING I EVER DID WAS SELL MY R80ST. MUST HAVE HAD A MOMENT OF TOTAL MADNESS BUT AM NOW TRYING TO REPLACE IT, IDEALLY WITH THE SAME ONE. SO IF ANYONE HAS OR CAN FIND B772 ARL IN THE UK FOR ME I4D LOVE TO HEAR. IT WAS AN INTERESTING BIKE TO RIDE AS IT WAS SUPPLIED NEW TO A DEALER IN CORNWALL FITTED WITH SPORT CAMS AND WOULD TRY TO THROW AN UNSUSPECTING RIDER OFF THE BACK UNDER HEAVY ACCELLERATION. WHERE IS IT NOW? OR ONE FOR SALE?

I need to know the correct placement of the spark plug wires. Does the front coil wire go to the left cylinder or am I backwards. Somehow I did a disconnect and lost my way. Thanks. Dennis G.
