The R80 Kitchen Special

A 1987 R80 that I bought as an accident victim with the intention of fitting it with 1000cc barrels and pistons in order to make a fast bike on the cheap. It's a conversion I heard about from the pages of the The Journal, the monthly magazine of the UK BMW Club, in an article by Paul Binswanger, the Bins of Moto-Bins. He'd done it to his G/S and then toured South Africa on it.

The bike was left parked in the street outside my apartment building for about a year under a cover while I wondered how to go about stripping it and rebuilding it. I lived in a tiny apartment on the 4th floor of a building with one 4-person-at-a-squeeze lift. A few beers solved the problem one sweaty Tokyo night in August 2001 - I was drinking with the Yellow Brothers, Yuichi and Takashi Shibuya, subsequently airhead riders both, and wondering alound where to do the work when Takashi suggested standing it on its end and taking it up in the lift. We went and measured the bike and the lift and found that it would fit if we took the front end off. Drunk, sweating and laughing we managed it. Over the next few months I rebuilt it in my kitchen. It's called the Kitchen Special, or the R80KS for short, in honour this

These are photos I took at the time and since as the bike has developed..
