I was born in 1975, lived in Kabul until the Russian tanks rolled in 1979. I am know 40 years old and live in Toronto Ontario Canada. This is the only thing that's has brought tears to eyes in a very long time. My father has pictures of him in Kabul University in the 60's with his female class mates wearing short skirts. It would be foolish to think that it will never return to this because never it too long of a time but I don't think it will happen in my life time. I have hopes that my children or grand children will visit an absolutely free productive and prosperous Afghanistan some day. You never know, I might be able to join. The country might be broken but the high spirit of the people lives. The progress in the world cricket standings is a great example. Love this site, Dr. Podlich, the comments, the people and especially the country of Afghanistan.

Thank you so much for publishing these images of our country- as it was before the Soviets and the Taliban. The West must see what has happened to a country that was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Afghanistan welcomed the World until 1978

I was going to school I Kandahar from 1967 thru 1968 and Kabul from 1970 thru 1971...loved living there and going to school at AISK...had to leave a year before I would graduate from there due to shutting down government agencies. The afghan pele were so great back then...sad to see the state of the country now.

Unbelievable, even for me as an Iranian that was grew up integrated with this culture, I feel sorry, sorry about what happened to our history, sorry about the consequences of continuous war, sorry about the side effects of religious beliefs, and sorry about what happened to Afghans, the only scrupulously Persian speakers left in this world, as they speak it in a more correct, pure, and precise fashion.

This is should be a reminder to people who think that Afghanistan was never a real country, never a garbage country, it became that way over years of war and regime changes. I am just amazed to think that americans went their for tourism. I myself am afghan, the country is slowly starting to rebuild, however it will never be the same as it once was...... Thank you so much for uploading the pictures and reminding me of my homeland

First of all, thanks to Mr Podlich for sharing some of the most beautiful pictures of Afghanistan from 1970s. I was born in 1988 and I live in Montreal Canada now for the last 12 years and I was 10 when I left to go to Pakistan. These pictures are so beautiful and wow this was not how Afghanistan looked like in the 1996-98 during the inhuman Taliban regime. I wish President and Dr Najibullah (R.I.P.)was alive today to rule Afghanistan.

Wow these pictures are stunning and evoke a sense of nostalgia even for me since I wasnt even born at that time, it makes me sad for my parents who witnessed such a great period and its destruction. Sometimes I forget that Afghans love their country looking at all the superficial Afghans who have emigrated and lost empathy or a sense of responsbility for the watan, thank you so much for the pictures and even better the comments have been inspiring!

I am doing research about Afghanistans becuase I read the book The Break Winner. The book isn't for adults (vocabulary wise), but the message is very touching. Anyway, I'd like to say I love those who are fighting for Afghan's rights right now, and also I feel for all those who suffered. I hope soon everyone in the world will have equal rights like we do in the U.S.A. Thanks for letting me share :)

I am an American and just returned from Afghanistan and will be part of the reconstruction effort helping build power lines there. The opportunity is there as is the funding from many countries. What Afghanistan needs more than ever is for its educated people to return and help in the rebuilding. Contact USAID, Black and Veach, World Bank, etc. Go!

Although I've been in the United States since I was five and have always wondered what afghanistan use to look like before all these sad wars. It makes me feel happy and proud to see that afghanistan use to be such a modern and beautiful country, but sad to see my country it in its present state. Hopefully with the help of the world and our current leaders incorruptible and honest practices, we the "cheated and deprived" generation can on day brag to our friends about how wonderful of a place it is to visit.

Thank you! I lived there '58-'61, so the times shown here are closer to what I remember. I will always miss it, always carry it in my heart, but never return--the Afghanistan I knew doesn't exist except in photos like these and memories. Especially grateful for the one of Paghman...it looks the most like it did then, when we used to go up there and swim in the pool you see at the back. Brings many memories of my childhood--I hope all those of you who hope to return get to, and that you return to a country not as bad as I fear. For all THINKING Americans: Please accept our abject apology (I've fought and demonstrated as hard as I COULD, but to no avail--we don't belong there!!!!).
