LeVon Garland of Covina had a pretty good day aboard the Qualifier 105 at Alijos Rocks when he hooked and caught the two biggest fish to come to the boat on his ten-day trip with skipper Joe Crisci and 25 other anglers.
“He bit when I was 200 yards out,” Garland told dock reporter Bill Roecker November 4 at Pt. Loma Sportfishing. “My bait was way out there on both of those tuna. After the big one ran, he was a lot farther out than that.”
LeVon’s first-place yellowfin weighed 75 pounds. The smaller one went 70 pounds. He said he put a sardine on a 4/0 Gamakatsu circle hook tied to pink Yo-Zuri 50-pound line. He used 80-pound Izorline Spectra on an Avet HX reel and a GRUSA seven-foot rod he wrapped himself.
Jason Garcia of Whittier caught a 65-pound wahoo on a sardine with wire leader and 30-pound line to take second place. Henry Garcia (no relation) of Whittier got a 61.5-pound yellowfin tuna to win third place.
