Day Job

Williamsburg, VA

It's amazing the things you can learn by just sitting around and watching the world. Today I was photographing a particularly active set of flowers in the garden - lots of the usual suspects, bees, flies, butterflies, even some cool beetles. Then I noticed this guy, a hated little tiger mosquito getting some nectar. He was working as hard as the bees at it, well maybe a lot slower. Nectar is apparently the main source of food for mosquitos (at least according to Wikipedia).

Then it clicked, with all the hardware for sucking nectar out of flowers to sucking blood out of animals, damn it if evolution doesn't have great logic...

Mosquitoes are one of the main polinators on the earth. Especially the males, and this is a male, the males don't bite people, so they are not a nuissance.
