My Family left Peru around the same time, and they have only returned for visits. I have not returned to South America since the late sixties......Some day it will get better....Markos..............www.nevadaoutback.com

Pretty accurate on the economic plumet and the date, with a small clarification:
In 1970 "took over" = were elected
Then from bad to much worse -- three years later the military took over and the value of a human life plummeted
only in this case, took over did mean "TOOK OVER" (and stayed for 17 years)

That was the year, I believe, the communist party took over and later the economy plummeted.
