The Wahweap Hoodoos are a fantastic collection of whimsical hoodoos located in the Wahweap Wash in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. They are accessible by hiking up Wahweap Creek (~ 8 miles RT) from the Wahweap Trailhead on Nipple Creek Road (BLM 327, 3.8 miles from Big Water). The reddish capstones on the hoodoos were originally from the adjacent canyon walls, where they broke off and came to rest on a bench of white fine-grained sandstone. Over time, the harder capstones protected the softer sandstone from erosion and eventually a white pedestal with a capstone was left. This is similar to other rock formations we had seen (most notably the Toadstools), but what is unique about this area is the white, fine sandstone. The sandstone is grooved from the rain - the rocks look like they were melted. There are three groups of hoodoos, each offering some interesting features. The most popular hoodoo is the "Tower of Silence" - a slender white hoodoo with a small red capstone set amidst "melted" white rocks. Really cool! In contrast to the "Tower of Silence" is a massive hoodoo located in the opposite hoodoo group. It's particularly impressive to see a person stand next to to and give it a sense of scale. The hoodoo group in the middle contains a varied collection of hoodoos, referred to as "Hoodoo Central" in Martres' book. Such a unique and fascinating area!
