Stacked Up on Wall Street

After about 2 hours of scrambling on the lower slopes of the Grand Teton we arrived at a notorious ledge called Wall Street. Most climbers plan to arrive at this spot, the beginning of technical climbing, just prior to sunrise. This gives you the absolute earliest start on the technical sections which is very important because you need to be off the mountain before Noon so as to avoid the afternoon thunderstorms.

Wall Street starts out as a 6 foot wide ledge, and slowly tapers over 30 horizontal feet to nothing. As the ledge tapers down one must step across to the ridge proper. When you do this there is 3,000 vertical feet of air beneath your feet (don't fall!) all the way down to a campsite called The Moraine. This is a picture of all the day's climbers stacked up on Wall Street awaiting the sunrise to begin technical climbing.
