One of the most noted features of Urnes is the elaborate carvings on the outside of the church, which were believed to have been transferred from an older building that once stood on the same site. I read that the carvings of stems, vines, and leaves entwined with serpents, dragons, and other fantasy creatures were representative of the meshing of Norway's pagan past with the new Christianity.
