After the steep climb from ex Malga Travenanzes we entered the Masarč amphitheater on our way to Rifugio Giussani. What an interesting, other worldly landscape. I felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, which is why it was so surprising when we kept seeing war relics. War is hard enough to imagine, never mind waging a war in such a stark, unforgiving landscape. The book said this area was a veritable World War I ghost town and I thought that was an apt description. In the background of this picture is Sasso Cubico. The book said this cube shaped rock was worth exploring to see the amazing man made interior, still housing timber structures.
