Ligatne is a town in Vidzeme close to Gauja river. Its tributary, the eponymous Ligatne river provided power for a paper mill that was built here in early 19th century, one of the first factories in Latvia. It gave rise to workers village with characterstic gallery-type wooden homes, an architectural monument these days.
Unfortunately, after almost two centuries of activity, the paper mill closed in 2013. It was obviously technically obsolete and working there was a tough affair, but the rough industrial beauty was just breath-taking. You can see its pictures under the gallery "Industrial Latvia", taken when it was still in operation.
