I have always been fascinated by ancient cultures and have recently decided to start a photographic collection of different styles of Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. Represented in this gallery is a wide range of styles, cultures, and ages of rock art. Until more advances dating are made, radio-carbon and others, the dates for the pictographs are all estimates made from current research. The oldest representation is from the Barrier Canyon Style of UT in Horseshoe Canyon and Sego Canyon. Although a few pieces of paint from the Horseshoe Canyon rock art are dated from 2000 BC to 500 AD, artifacts associated with these sites date back as early as 9000-7000 BC! Yes, this would put these people in the time period hunting mammoths and mastodon across the SW. Other rock art images in this gallery are from more recent cultures and others are unknown in age and origin, all of which I have noted on the captions for each. The names for some have been given by archeologists, and many do not have names. Therefore, I have come up with some of my own. |
