Good question, Vern. I shot this both ways, as a single image (with perfectly exposed highlights) and an HDR. The problem with the single image was that there was very little detail in the shadow areas, such as the background forest and the nearby trees. That's clearly not the case in the HDR. The reason the HDR worked better is that this was at least a medium contrast scene, measured by the spot metered difference between the lightest (clouds) and darkest areas of the scene (shoreline).
