Oaxaca

"Mexico is naturally surreal"
-- Andre Breton

Well, I could not resist the force. So, over the Memorial weekend a friend of mine and I took another trip to Mexico. We only had 5 days and wanted to spend time in both Mexico city and Oaxaca. Arrived in Mexico City on Thursday afternoon (May 24th). Walked around the city that afternoon and the whole Friday. Took the midnight bus to Oaxaca. It's a fabulous option as you sleep and commute at the same time without wasting any time. Reached Oaxaca at 7am Saturday morning. Spent the whole Saturday and Sunday in Oaxaca and the neighbouring villages, and took the midnight bus back to Mexico City on Sunday.Back in Mexico City on Monday morning 7am. Took another bus to Puebla for the day and back to Mexico City that night. We were exhausted, but the Pueblano mole is definitely worth the trip. Back in the US on Tuesday (May 30th).

Personal note:
The vision of Mexico I have right now in my mind is that of stretched space, scattered objects live or still, formal geometric lines and planes, blissful melancholy, all having strange relationships to each other. There is always a quiet interplay between "several main objects". Since I got back from my first trip to Mexico (in Dec/Jan) I have been trying to figure out what exactly it was about Mexico that fascinated me and why I heard from so many people that my pictures carried a sense of "alienation". I found the answer in the Breton quote "Mexico is naturally surreal" and in Octavio Paz's "labyrinth of solitude" few weeks ago. When I went back to Mexico last week I was heavily influenced by this vision of surrealism and alienation. The vision got even more strongly embossed in my grey matter in this trip. I may have pushed it little too hard this time.
