15th August 2015

Hello friends, we had an interesting walky round this rose garden today. The nice thing about rose
gardens is all the crumbly flower beds, which are great for digging in. During my younger years
I would have wanted a little dig when Dad's back was turned. I expect the gardener would
love to find a hole dug in this flower bed, don't you?

Dad: It seemed appropriate for the 70th anniversary of VJ Day to share a pic of Pooch admiring
these 'Peace' roses - I have to defer to others' knowledge of the history of roses but I seem to
recall that the 'Peace' rose is for some reason particularly associated with WW2...
If you would like to see some more rose photos from today I've uploaded some here: http://www.pbase.com/poochdad/roses

For some reason my links no longer appear !! does anyone else have this problem or no the reasons why this is happening ??
The story comes from the Wiki, should you like to follow it through.

It's a very pretty diplay Pooch and disturbing the roots of roses is never a good idea...but sniffing if fine :)

The story of Peace is more than just about a rose in a time of uncertainty

It was developed by French horticulturist Francis Meilland in the years 1935 to 1939. When Meilland foresaw the German invasion of France, he sent cuttings to friends in Italy, Turkey, Germany, and the United States to protect the new rose. It is said that it was sent to the US on the last plane available before the German invasion where it was safely propagated by the Conard Pyle Co. during the war.[1]
