A foggy visit to the top of West Peak on Meriden Mountain and the original home of WDRC FM Radio (Hartford, CT) The station was founded by my Grandfather and much of the building pictured here was built to house his FM radio transmitter. A pioneer in both AM and FM radio, he was given the original patent for binaural sound, forerunner of today's stereo sound.
In the pictures are my Mother, older brother Paul and Rick Walsh, who works for Clear Channel Communications and is engineer for WHCN radio (formerly WDRC) He was gracious enough to arrange a tour so my Mother could visit the site. She remembers traveling to the mountain top as a child with her Father during the early days of radio.
The old transmitter/studio site built in 1936 still stands, although it was added on to in later years. And, the original 90 foot tower, dwarfed by the addition of numerous taller towers over the years, still stands as a testament to the history of radio and my Grandfather, Franklin M. Doolittle.
