The Angel Road, Columbia, California, 2008

By backing away from this statue of an angel, which stands over a grave in Columbia’s cemetery, I change its context. I place it over the crest of a road instead of over a gravesite. The setting sun partially illuminates the angel, while the dark street and background isolates it and brings a dream like mood to the image. We ride on the road of an angel, and just over the hill, eternity awaits us.

Hi, Rosemary -- I think you are thinking of this one:http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/86310295
Very similar use of light and shadow.

This image reminds me of another one you have of Mao, but I couldn't find it in your galleries; do you know the one?

I saw the road to eternity metaphor as soon as I began to walk towards that angel. When we get into our 70s and find ourselves spending so much time photographing in cemeteries, such ideas as this are always floating about. What I did not consider, however, is your question, Tim. Who, indeed, gets to find the angels at the end? That's a subject for another picture.

As you so aptly describe in your caption, we all are on the road to eternity. But, maybe some of us won't find angels at the end.
