Elephant pores, Agra Fort, Agra, India, 2008

Painted elephants carry tourists through the ancient compounds of Agra Fort and Palace. This one has a dot on its forehead – very Indian. I moved in close to stress the detail of its pores. When seen as a group, these pores create a texture that defines the elephant.

I agree that this is a wonderful image. It would be wonderful as just an up close portrait but the painting adds the transcendent aspect to this.

Thanks, Mo -- in this case, less becomes more. There is much to shoot when photographing the largest land creature, and I thought the pores were its most intimate defining feature.
