Freedom, Bakersfield, California, 2007

I saw this large-scale representation of the Statue of Liberty standing against a downtown Bakersfield building over a block away. As I lifted my camera, four birds exploded into flight overhead, and I made this photograph. I only had one chance at it, and was fortunate to freeze the birds in a perfect arc of flight. Once again, we have a juxtaposition of symbols that will be interpreted in various ways, depending on the context a viewer brings to this image. The statue is a symbol of liberty, as well as a national symbol. The birds could be seen as doves of peace. Seen in juxtaposition, this image could be read by some as an anti-war statement. Others might see the birds as fleeing the statue, and read the image as an expression of diminished peace hopes in a troubled world. In either case, I intend the image as a catalyst for thought, emotion, and imagination.

Thanks, Cyndy -- I stopped to make a picture juxtaposing the Statue of Liberty against a drab industrial building, but as you say, there was not much depth of meaning. But at least I stopped to give it a try and was instantly rewarded when the birds, which has been sitting on the roof, exploded into flight. Because I had stopped to lift my camera for another reason altogether, I was rewarded. So yes, train your eye to look for juxtapositions that might be incongruous and at the same time express an idea. Even if it does not work, something else may happen that will.

Perfect timing. You're right, Phil, without the birds in flight, this image would be lacking something. I'm trying to train my photographer's eyes to "see" these possibilities.

I noticed that as well, Carol. It is not the same expression conveyed by the real Statue of Liberty. The look is indeed one of surprise, as if she just realized what was flying overhead.

And then there's the look of surprise on her face! Amusing!

Thanks for fleshing out the Bakersfield connection here, Jenene. Migrants have been among the most passionate patriots -- their road has been difficult, but many who came here have indeed found a better life than elsewhere. They have much to be thankful for. The birds that are flying from this representation of the Statue of Liberty can indeed be seen as representing the spirit of the migrant worker here.

Personally, I can never look at the Statue of Liberty (or its representation) without thinking immediately of the desire for freedom and the hope it symbolizes for millions who came and are still coming to America. The flying birds add further to the idea of freedom. I find it appropriate that this was found in Bakersfield. Being familiar with the area, it's really the 'heartland' of California, more reminiscent politically of the Midwest than is typically found elsewhere in the state. It's also a place rich with the history of the migrant worker - a place where hard work held the hope of a better life.

Yes, I see that as well -- the birds can be seen as messengers, spreading the idea represented by this iconic statue to those who may be in need of it.

I will post my own image with this representation of the Statue of Liberty, but in this case I see the birds as the hope of freedom flying out from the torch to the nation, the immigrant and the world.
