Ghost riders, Alabama Hills, Lone Pine, California, 2007

Lone Pine's Alabama Hills provided the location for many western movies. The setting sun spotlights this tree and the surrounding grasses, creating background shadows resembling huge, haunting figures. They bring to mind the actors who once dueled in the dust of these same hills. The barren tree seems just as ghostly. Its branches reach out towards the shadowy figures that dominate the image.

Glad to help, as always, Iris. All of us had the honor of sharing a very special scene here that evening. And each of us saw it in our own way and photographed it accordingly. Glad you had a vertical that you liked.

Based on your suggestion, Phil, I changed the image of this tree in my gallery. I found that I actually did shoot it from different angles and found a vertical that gave the tree more context. I came in a little closer and have two shadowy figures which I agree does make the hill come more alive. Thank you for your suggestion.

Thanks, Carol. Yes, we were all together as I made this shot. The shadows were cast by trees and boulders, and they do indeed overwhelm the tree in scale, which is why I made this image. The shadows dominate the image -- they intimidate the tree.

I see four figures in the shadow shapes as if you recorded us all in your picture as you shot it. We were mostly all there next to you as I recall as you shot this. I like the fact that the tree is nearly as large as the shadow figures, actually almost stunted by them.
