In the medina, Fez, Morocco, 2006

I was not sure if this vendor sells bread, magazines or both. But he catches up on his reading while waiting for customers in the labyrinthine Fez medina. This image expresses such human values as diligence and curiosity. Morocco’s literacy rate is very low, which would make one wonder if this man can read the magazines in his hand. Perhaps he is just looking at the pictures. We will never know, so there is a good bit of mystery here as well. The fact that his hands and visible but his face is not brings the human value of mystery into this image as well. The expressive value of this image is essentially based on its abstract approach. The dark, hooded face is far more stimulating to the imagination than a fully illuminated face would be here.

You have a great eye for detail, Merri, in this almost nearly devoid of it. The position and shape of the man's fingers almost precisely mirror that bread that he sells here. I saw mystery as the primary human value at work here, while you hint at such values as timelessness and "monastic" and then settle on "taking a break" as a good choice. I agree with you on all three.

This photograph has such a timeless and monastic feeling about it that I can almost ignore the modern magazine the man is reading. Finding a quiet time to "take a break" seems to be to a good human value here particularly if there are usually crowds of tourists around. I also like the way the stack of bread matches his hands.

Thanks, Don, for being the first to comment at length on this image. It was among my favorite pictures from my recent visit to Morocco. I tried to come as close as I could to tha line between "seeing" and "implying" here. I exposed with the spot meter on the frame of the case, the brightest spot in the image. The rest of the image became darker, so dark, in fact, that the hooded face of the man here is almost invisible. Seeing it comes as a shock. I see that you are trying to do similar work in your own galleries. The more we imply in an image, the more we can involve the imagination of the viewer.
