Evening on the farm, Preston, Idaho, 2006

I give this scenic vista a sense of scale by including the flag and the windmill, preceded by the bushes in the foreground. The key to this image is the wonderful sky, with the long, balloon-like cloud as its focal point. The image proceeds, layer by layer, to reveal the nature of the subjects: grass, then bushes, then the only man-made objects, worked by the wind, finally all of it backed by the hills, mountains and clouds.

Thanks so much, Lyndsay, for your comment and request. I've responded by email. I am delighted that you even know of Preston, Idaho, and I hope your husband would enjoys this photo.

Juxtaposing layers are a critical component of expressive photography, Al Li. So much so, that I have devoted entire galleries to both the subject of layers (http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/layered_image ) as well as justaposition
(http://www.pbase.com/pnd1/juxtapositionhttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/juxtaposition ). You will also find layering to be a major part of not only vistas such as this, but in almost all effective landscapes. Glad you are learning, Ai Li -- because I know how eager you are to put what you learn to work.

I'm beginning to better appreciate the use of layers. Another lesson well taught and learned. Thanks, Phil.
