Steamy spring, Benton Hot Springs, California, 2006

We arrived in Benton Hot Springs at the perfect moment to interpret its namesake. The sun was filtering light through the trees and the rising clouds of steam from this hot spring, giving this image a delightfully sylvan atmosphere. To make the most of it, I shoot into the light, giving shape to the steam and stressing the rays of light that enter from the top of the frame. I abstract the spring itself, anchoring the image with deeply shadowed rocks, and letting the water flow connect diagonally to the flow of light through the leaves of the overhead tree. The image seems to move moisture in two directions at once.

I dedicate this image to you, Han-- Dawn is a wonderful name, full of promises to come. I hope this image does justice to those promises.

Yes, I was thinking fairy tale here, too -- one expects a dwarf, leprechaun, or sprite to appear at any moment. Ironically, this old town of Benton Hot Springs is struggling to survive. Much of it seems to be in decay.

It's like a place you'd expect to find in a fairy tale. What a place to escape to.

The light was magical, wasn't it? We arrived at Benton Springs at exactly the right moment. The sun as at the right angle to catch the steam, and the temperature was at the right level to make the steam. And I tried to find the right spot to best tell this story. Thanks for appreciating its beauty.

It is hard to believe that this little bit of beauty exist on a back road in the Eastern Sierras. That morning light was extraordinary.
