Understanding the past, Sanjusangen-do Temple, Kyoto, Japan, 2006

This huge 700 year-old temple, containing 1,001 life sized wooden statues of Buddha, is one of Japan’s greatest treasures. I photographed this young tourist as she was gathering information about this place. The light reflecting off the surface of the sign she is studying illuminates her face, symbolizing the knowledge she is absorbing. Knowledge is a human value, and I feel this image expresses it well. I also like the way the wind blows a strand of hair across her face – but she seems too absorbed to even notice it. We can express much about what we encounter in our travels simply by photographing the expressions and reactions of other tourists to what they may be seeing at the moment.

A candid image is a truthful one. Thanks, caveman lee, for appreciating that aspect of it.

Thanks, Ana. This image was not rehearsed in any way -- it was the very opposite: spontaneous. I saw this young woman reading this information, and instinctively began photographing her expression. She never saw me -- I was holding my breath too. If she caught sight of me, the photo would evaporate. I made about four images of her as she read. My camera makes no noise at all when I shoot and that was a huge help. And so was the telephoto lens.

This is a truly special capture. Almost like a rehersed portrait. I love the way the wind caught her hair and mostly the totally absorbed look on her face... even the open mouth is there in sign of wonder. I caught myself holding my breath here, because I didn't want to disturb her...
This is a special capture indeed. I really love this photo.

Xin, you see in her face what I see: utter absorbtion. The hair blowing across the face is critical -- she is simply too intent on learning about this temple to reach up and brush it away. When people are totally involved in something their mouth often falls open. (My wife is always reminding me to shut my mouth when I am shooting --I am simply too busy thinking to keep it shut!) You have an uncanny sense of human values, Xin -- which will help you become a wonderful photographer.

She has this absorptive look…So well and consistently expressed in every detail of her face….slightly locked eyebrows, partially opened mouth , and her attentive and contemplative look of the things on board… and what’ more, that strand of hair make this image more than beautiful to look at. The hair, from my views, is the great complementary component that makes me feel the existence of the breeze at that moment, and what’s more, I feel the flow of time and this flow has been frozen by your capture. All those elements make this portrait just perfect! like it a lot, Phil.
