Freight Train, Barstow, California, 2006

The power lines provide a stage, the setting sun a backdrop, and the freight train is the principal player in this Barstow scene. Each offers a layer of meaning, which, when superimposed upon each other, combines subject and context into a coherent presentation.

We can make art and expression out of any subject, Jack -- including industrial landscapes such as this one. Utility poles and power lines are usually considered eye sores, but they can be used as symbols, layers, and compositional elements to give an image both coherence and meaning.

This is the best instance of making art of industrial landscape elements!! I find, I am very drawn to the layered images and usually select them when I shoot an image, if possible.

There's nothing like a sunset to add warmth and intimacy to any subject, Mo.
