Tusker in the shadows, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, 2006

This huge bull was only a few feet away when I made this portrait. I saw the way the light fell on the tusk and on the green leaves before him, and regarded both as symbolic of the major challenges facing the African elephant -- poaching and sustenance. The full 420mm zoom allowed me to fill my frame with its head and extended ears. I used my spot meter to abstract the image, exposing for the leaves and that tiny splash of sunlight on the tip of the tusk, and allowing the elephant itself to nearly vanish into the shadows. Its eyes are fixed upon us, yet we feel their stare more easily than we can see them looking at us.

Thanks, Kal -- I consider this image to be one of the cornerstones of this gallery. It is, in my view, more than an elephant. It represents a state of mind as well.

There is a warning in those eyes, and that foliage is like a barrier, a line to be crossed...the irony is that such a large animal is using such a weak and simple foliage as the line to be crosses and the cover to hide and watch...great image. K

Thanks, Alister for this comment. I agree. Without technology such as my spot meter and 420mm lens, I could not have made this image as I did. And Denis, thank you for recognizing the subtle, almost hypnotic force of the elephant's stare which confronts us.

Superb picture. Black (the eye), white, green. That elephant is looking right through me.

This is a very strong image...Good use of the technology to get the desired effect...bottom line, know your kit and how to use it....like I said on one of my other posts, our tools enable us to create the shot we see in our heads before we press the shutter release...
