Picket Fence, Bodie, California, 2004

Some of Bodie’s original fencing is still intact, reminding us that actual human beings once inhabited these houses. It is important to somehow recall the human side of Bodie if we are to appreciate what happened here over 100 years ago. They were not all killers and louts in Bodie – there were also people who took pride in where they lived, and who they were. The symbolic presence of worn picket fence goes a long way here – it may be warped and broken with the sage already reaching for the porch. The windows behind this fence may be cracked, and their curtains torn, but this picture tells us that once, a long time ago, there were actually ordinary people living in this house. And that is why this image sticks in the mind and helps makes this place into a real place.

This photo is beautiful and haunting. I'm studying photography at the moment and have an assignment on doing just this, a photo series on my home town conveying a sense of place - I'm so glad I came across your site, I couldn't have found a better example of how it should be done.

The frayed curtains are an important part of this image, Vera. You are right -- they represent the last vestige of something that was one very intimate and personal. And you are right to feel unwanted here.

Yes, the fence reminds us of the people who once lived here, but even more so for me are the frayed remains of curtains hanging on the door window. I associate curtains with privacy; a privacy which has long ago been lost. I feel timid about invading their personal space. It is the curtains for me that remind me this was once someones home.

Thanks, Tom, for your wonderful comment on this image. This texture is very evocative, conveying the wear and tear of the years on this godforsaken place. And thank you for the kind words on my images. We are truly blessed to be able to enjoy this remarkable digital era.

I've been to Bodie - some years ago, but as time marches slowly things haven't changed much. This photo shows the range of texture in the weathered wood of the fence and the building. My feeling is that this aspect of the town exemplifies the emotions that it evokes. All of your posted work is excellent and an inspiration to emulate. Alas, my visit there was before digital photography and the development of the FZ 10 and 20.
