Cigarette seller, Lhasa, Tibet, 2004

This rack of cigarettes, mounted just outside of the door of a Lhasa shop, is useful for smokers who are in a hurry. Passing customers just have to point to a pack, and the clerk quickly grabs it for them. I used a fast shutter speed, almost 1/400th of a second, to freeze both her expression and gesture.

Yes, Christine - the facial expression is certainly one of suprise or perhaps agitation. I think she must have spotted me and wants nothing more than to grab those cigarettes and get back into the store.

Without your comment Phil, we would think that she is surprised/upset about something.

"Covert Relations" - I like that term. Gestures are very subtle. But photographers who specialize in capturing life as it is, such as street photographers and photojournalists, are skilled observers. They read gesture, they anticipate gesture, and they capture gesture. And that is what I tried to do here, Zebra.

"expression and gesture" ,I do exercises in streets to catch them these days. There is a delicate relation among the woman's expression, her hand, and the rack of cigarettes.Yes,the relation tell me a story.Phil, you have two special eyes which can catch covert relations.
