iPhone selfie, Phoenix, Arizona, 2018

I rarely make selfies, but felt it was about time to try one. I used window lighting, and include one of my favorite images, a framed photograph of Bridal Veil Falls in Yosemite National Park, in the background. It adds a bit of context to the image. I converted it to black and white and warmed it a touch with sepia to remove the color on the wall, the colors on me, and the color in the photograph. All that color competed with the subject of the picture: myself.

Wow Phil! I did not realize...10 years already (well, this Fall...).
It is unreal how time goes fast and...faster. Like sand between our fingers we can't stop...
We should celebrate this September ;-)
À bientôt...

p.s. I really like the "light" sepia colour for this picture, by the way.

Thanks so much, Claudia, for coming to this image and connecting with it. It is always a special event for me when you come back into my galleries and leave a comment or two.

And yes, I see a bit of "zen tranquility" in this selfie - I must have made at least fifty images of myself until i stopped trying to control the image and instead just relaxed and let the image come to me instead of forcing myself to go to it. A good lesson in self-portraiture?

I also share those fond memories of that day we spent shooting together back in 2009. Can you believe that ten years have come and gone since that photographic adventure together in Montreal? I was a kid of 75 at the time, yet I don't feel that much different as I approach 85.

Thanks so much for letting me know you are OK and for your delightful observations on my initial attempt at selfie-making. I wish you all the best and will welcome your observations always.

Bonjour Phil...
4.5 months since you took that selfie... it definitely has been too long since I've visited you here on PBase... I am keeping too quiet myself but, anyway, that is how it is since a while and still at the moment but my love for photography will always remain and, to this day, i cherish the day we spent taking pictures few years ago...
Comment ça va? Hope...you are managing but from the picture, you seem so well, you always exhude that "zen" tranquility...that i always liked.
This is indeed a wonderful selfie of you...and you look even a little younger!
I really like how "genuine" the picture is.
Your smile is wonderful, just how i remember it...
Thanks for the photography inspiration and tips...
Be safe x

Thanks, Stephanie, for this comment. You could always see me here, however this selfie brings me a bit more up to date.

(I noted that you live in Chester County, PA -- I lived in nearby Delaware County, PA from 1970 to 1991. We lived on Route 320 (Chester Road) in Swarthmore. Our 1906 Victorian home still stands between Harvard Avenue and Yale Avenue.)

Great SP Phil! Nice to see you!

Thanks, Carol. Great to hear from you, and I hope all is going well with you. I enjoyed making this selfie with my iPhone -- the image is just as sound technically as any I've made with my DSLR camera. I love the touch of sepia as well -- it definitely warms the image and makes a closeup such as this into a much softer encounter. The 20x16 framed print of Bridal Veil Falls on the wall behind me, which I made way back in 2008 on a Dave Wyman photographic visit to Yosemite, features a misty rainbow effect where the water hits the rocks. Tim May made the print, and it indeed lends personal meaning to this selfie. You can view it athttp://www.pbase.com/pnd1/image/97668762&exif=Y

Nice to "see" you again, you're looking well! I like how the sepia toning softens the portrait. I also like how you included that photograph you love in the frame, which adds some personal meaning to the picture.

Thanks, Anitta. I had been thinking of replacing my previous social media portrait for awhile, but did not have anyone around skilled at expressing character with a camera. (You certainly could have done it, but you were probably in Finland, which is a bit far.) So I decided to pull out my iPhone and make my first selfie. (What you see here is the only shot out 50 or 60 that worked!.) Glad you like this portrait of me, made eighteen years after we met each other that night in Dubrovnik. I guess I must be aging well!

I really like this portrait of you, Phil. V
