Derailed, New York City, New York, 2016

This graffiti-laden New York City subway car looked quite out of place standing in the middle of an office building’s empty lobby. And that’s why I made this image. It is seen completely out of its context. The wheels have vanished. It made its last run many years ago. I have no idea how it came to this place. The lobby itself was obviously not in use. It seemed utterly surreal, not only in life, but in this image as well. I made this picture through the lobby’s window. There were reflections of people coming from behind me. They are seen here as symbolic ghostly subway riders -- entering through a ramp at right, and exiting through a glass door at left. The primary colors are warm: rich blue walls, dusty yellowish-brown floor, vivid blue and red graffiti on the car. All combine to lend a nostalgic mood to this incongruous image.

I find your comment breathtaking, Rose. Thank you. The allusion to the Wizard of Oz is perfect touch. This subway car is displayed entirely out of its normal context, elevating it to an urban relic, while the reflections add a mystical, ghostly ambiance to the scene. You compare it here to a book and film that has spawned numerous myths and meanings over the years including a theory that L. Frank Baum's 1900 book was really intended as an economic fairy tale involving populism and the gold standard. I intended this image as a metaphor for New York Subway itself, which began operation in 1904. The Oz book became one of the most famous movies of all time while the New York subway provided the model for urban transportation that has changed very little over the last 118 years.

Toto, we're not in Kansas. The colors are marvelous. The ground evokes a yellow brick road. Instead of Emerald City, the destination on the sign says Times Square. Graffiti (lions), reflections (tigers), and bold colors (bears), Oh My!
