Under the storm, Phoenix, Arizona, 2015

A massive rainstorm hit Phoenix on October 17, 2015. It flooded streets and knocked out electrical power for thousands of residents. I grabbed this quick image with my iPhone just as the surging storm clouds overhead mingle with a desert sunset. The rain had already started to fall and darkness has come, yet small patches of the fiery sunset manage to break though the clouds at the leading edge of the storm. Framed by abstracted trees, the storm's billowing clouds, laden with moisture, express the explosive energy of nature itself.

I thank you for this comment, Stephanie. I give all the credit to nature itself here -- there is little that I did photographically except to grab the phone from its holster and make several images of the spectacle working its way through the sky above me. I was also in the right place at the right time, and having a camera of some kind always with us certainly helps in that regard.

Thanks, Konrad. I am glad you enjoyed this image, and my commentary. I hope that all of my commentary on this web site will not only make my pictures more interesting, but will also provide useful knowledge about expressive photography.

Thanks, Iris -- you put it so well. I still am very frustrated with cell phone photography, but am very glad I always have a camera on my belt -- for just such moments as this.

This image speaks of the beauty, drama, and power of Mother Nature. What a stunning moment! So glad you had that ancient 4S with you to memorialize your vision.

Agreed, Jolka.

Right, Phil, we just need to take the moment when it lasts.

Thanks so much, Jolka, for commenting on this image. I am always asked by my students what kind of camera I use to make my pictures. I tell them that a camera is just a tool -- it is the vision of the photographer that is most important. In the case of this image, I used my cell phone to make the picture, an ancient iPhone 4S. As a wise man once said, "the best camera in the world is the one you have with you." If I had taken the time to go back into my house to get my "real camera" I would have probably missed much of this moment.
