Taking a rest, St. Barts, French West Indies, 2011

St. Bart’s harbor was crowded with yachts from all over the world on New Year’s Day, and this pair of tourists are taking them all in from a sedentary vantage point. I layer this image by photographing the tourists from behind, abstracting them in the process, and using them as my foreground anchor. The viewer sees the harbor from their vantage point – and what a harbor it is! The tourists seem to be an oasis of serenity amidst the clutter of luxurious yachts and sailboats that fill the middleground and background.

Thanks for confirming my view of St. Barts, Carol. It has not changed much since you visited thirty years ago, however the toys of the wealthy have expanded exponentially over the years in size and cost.

Your layered image complete with million dollar yachts really does capture the essence of St. Bart's affleunce. This is the only island I have ever been to in the Caribbean and although it was thirty some years ago, this is exactly how I remember it being. The layers do build the image and create the fine relaxed atmosphere that is so true to the place.

Glad you see this image as about recuperation. But since two cruise liners were anchored in St. Barts on New Years Day (Regent and Windstar), my guess is that these folks are off one of those ships. I can tell you for a fact that many of the passengers on our own vessel had a long night and a short morning. So perhaps recuperation should be the title here.

I can only imagine what an electric atmosphere it must have been in St.Barts on New Years Eve when people ushered the new year at midnight. It makes me think that these two tourists are recuperating and enjoying a quiet moment after the night's activities!
