Choices, Istanbul, Turkey, 2009

Istanbul offers one of the most exotic and varied marketplaces in the world. The Grand Bazaar is 600 years old and holds thousands of shops. The exotic Spice Bazaar is almost as famous. This small shop offers tourists hundreds of felt hats – the choices seem infinite. I made this image by night with a 14mm wideangle focal length stretching the choices on hand.

I just noticed the halo around your head -- I did not mean to confer sainthood upon you, only inspiration. As I recall, there was no shopkeeper in the vicinity at this moment. They must have trusted you. Hence the halo?

Far from sainthood - if I remember, at the time I was quite grumpy and feeling under the gun. The only thing missing in this image of a tourist shopping is the shop keeper bugging the shopper.

It is almost mystical that you think of mosaics here, Rose, Actually, this shop stands on very site of Constantine's great palace in Byzantium, and the floors of that palace were covered in amazing mosaics. A few hundred yards away, there is a museum that displays a section of the actual mosaic floor. As for the halo, Tim is a nice fellow, but I am not sure he qualifies for sainthood yet.

I like the halo of light around his head; a modern day comparison to the ancient religious mosaics.
