Edgy, New York City, New York, 2009

Heavy rain can paralyze traffic on New York’s busy streets. I zoom in on the driver who anxiously waits for the long line of cars in front of him to move. The wet window abstracts him, yet we can still see that he is edgy, his fingers working on his chin.

You always find metaphorical content in small details, Tim -- I was concentrating so hard on hand of the driver that I did not even notice the reflected streak on the door until you mentioned it. A break in the journey, indeed. And what a journey it must have been for this guy. I would not like to be driving a car at 34th and Lex in midtown Manhattan under any conditions, let alone during the crazyness that any storm brings to traffic. The streets are slick with rain, visibility is poor, pedestrians are taking risks, and the number of cars, busses, taxis, and trucks on this street is staggering. No wonder he seems frazzled.

The streak of reflected light speaks to me of his journey - I like that the pause of the hand is right over the interruption of the line.
