Chaos, Cordes, Arizona, 2009

I use a long telephoto lens here to pull background and foreground subjects together in order to create a sense of chaos. The back yard of the old general store in the ghost town of Cordes is filled with decaying cars, junk, and even outhouses. The focus here is on the car – its once elegant body now rusted and dented. Yet the softly focused outhouse that seems to be falling apart just behind it is just as important to the story here – it’s not just about an old car, but rather about an old car and the world it once lived in.

You make an excellent point, Vera. If I had included the sky in this shot, the implied chaos would be diminished. I generally keep the sky out of my pictures unless the sky itself (its color, clouds, scale, etc.) is part of the story. In this case, it was not.

I like how you have filled the frame with the chaos, rather than include sky, etc.

Thanks, Ann and Antonis -- there is often both beauty and sadness in chaotic situations. Thanks for seeing them in this image.

Chaos indeed but you managed to turn it to a beautiful photo.

A really interesting shot though a little sad to see.
